Eagle Reach Wilderness Resort
Vacy,
Hunter Valley NSW
Collins and Turner were commissioned to design a series of ‘eco-cabins’ at the award-winning Eagle Reach Wilderness Resort near Barrington Tops National Park in the Upper Hunter Valley.
Careful site-planning affords each cabin total privacy and maximum views. A network of walking tracks along the brow of Mount George lead to the secluded cabins, dotted amongst mature eucalypts. Utilising local materials to create new forms, the project defines the country cabin.
There are no town services to the cabins and so they rely on sustainable energies and water. The responsive facade design combines fixed and operable layers to clear and screen-printed glass, with shading screens of preformatted galvanized iron a. Louvres and sun-screens are positioned for cross ventilation and sun-shading.
Due to the remoteness of the site and the desire for high finished quality, the low impact steel structure is to be prefabricated off site. Internal finishes combine recycled hardwood with Ortech straw board ceilings and linoleum floors. Wet areas are lined with fiber cement paneling.
