River House
Como, NSW
This house, for two graphic designers, occupies a steep waterfront site facing north over the Woronora River. The house is a simple abstract form which steps down to the river. The walls are clad in oxidised steel with a rust brown texture that blends with the earth. There are no opening to the sides of the house, ensuring privacy and seclusion. Windows and openings are instead concentrated on the northern facades capturing the sun and views. The abstract steel form is reminiscent of the sculptures of Richard Serra and Eduado Chilida.
Internally the three dimensional nature of the stepped form is exploited in such a way as to create exiting visual links and dynamic spaces. The defining elements of the surrounding eucalypt forest and the river are borrowed for internal use in courtyards, with planting and pools of water.
